The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is the fifth entry in the series which is the sequel to The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion which was set 200 years prior. This game released on the clever date of 11,11, 2011 which couldn't have done anything but help with the marketing. For those of you not familiar with the series the game takes place in the fictional world of Tamriel which is a fantastical land much like that of Middle Earth in the Lord of the Rings series. You know, magic, bows and arrows and of course swords. The series is known for it's excellent open world action rpg style that allows the player to literally go anywhere and do anything. In Skyrim if you want to chop wood, you can, if you want to ride horses, you can. If you want to go on quests and save the innocent, you can, if you want to buy a house and/ or get married, you can. The list is endless in this massive traversable world. You don't always have to be good either, you can kill and steal til your hearts content or do anything in between.

This entry to the series most notable brings the addition of the hugely popular mythical(?) creature known as the dragon. These boss-type battles happen during the main story line as well as randomly throughout your adventure and these battles are truly epic. If you are randomly attacked by a dragon your only warning is the dramatic intro music and you better be ready, these fights are not easy.

The game is being received very well since it's release a few short weeks ago, and I must say it is easily the best game I've ever played. The freedom to be whoever you want (11 playable races, male or female!!) and do whatever you want is something all gamers have longed for. I am not a video game reviewer nor am I going to give skyrim a numeric score but I will offer you these links to reviews done by the people who do this for a living so you can all see what I mean.

  • – 9.0 Here is Gamespot's review of Skyrim for the Xbox 360 which also provides an excellent video review
  • – 9.5 Here is Ign's review for the game for the Playstation 3, the caption to the article is humorously true to what the game is doing to me, it says, “Say goodbye to real life.”
  • – 94/100 This is PC Gamer's take on the game. It provides several great new screenshots for the game as well
  • Game Informer – 9.50 This is what my favorite magazine gave Skyrim, for the full article you'll probably need to grab the magazine somewhere but this is definitely worth reading.

One final thought: Buy Skyrim and do it with NFC (Near-field communication) !!
